Coaches

First, this: Since the four-and-one-half hours a student spends sitting for the SAT is a single experience, we require that our coaches be able and eager to teach all areas of the SAT.

Michelle Arkow

Michelle Arkow (Saco/Biddeford) received a BA in Spanish from Yale University. She has been teaching the SAT for over a decade, including several years teaching SAT classes at Yale University.

Bo Gallup

Bo Gallup (Brunswick and Midcoast area) received his B. A. in English from Bowdoin, did undergraduate work in mathematics at Tulane and graduate work in physics at the University of New Mexico. Bo has taught standardized tests, including the SAT and ACT, for over 20 years. Bo teaches SAT, ACT, and GRE prep as well as the SAT subjects in math and the sciences.

Keith Hart

Keith Hart (Brunswick and Lewiston) holds a B.A. in History from Acadia University and an education degree from University of Maine. Keith has taught and tutored International Baccalaureate courses, along with AP, SAT, and SSAT, during his time in overseas and the United States. Keith specializes in SAT prep and the AP and SAT subject tests in World History and American History.

 

Irene Haskins

Irene Haskins (Bangor) holds Bachelors and Master of Arts degrees in mathematics from Eastern New Mexico University and a Master of Science degree in applied mathematics from the University of Colorado. Irene has extensive tutoring background including nine years with the St. Vrain Adult Education program in Colorado and tutoring in the Learning Center at Husson University.

Claire Hirschmann

Claire Hirschmann (Scarborough to Augusta) received her B.A. in English from Yale and her M.Ed. from the Harvard School of Education. She has taught history, literature, and math in southern Africa and South America; she is in Maine working on founding a traveling high school. Claire teaches SAT and ACT prep.

Frank Hubbard

Frank Hubbard, Ph.D. (Bangor), a graduate of Amherst College and University of California, Berkeley, has taught test preparation for ten years and has been an educator for thirty. A former Fulbright scholar who studied in Finland, Frank is currently Dean of Science and Humanities at Husson College in Bangor. He specializes in SAT and ACT prep, along with the SAT Literature subject test.

Jessica Kaplan

Jessica Kaplan (Falmouth), a graduate of Bowdoin College and Stanford Law School and a 2008 inductee into the UNUM Educators Hall of Fame, designed and teaches a curricular SAT course for South Portland High School. Jessica teaches ACT prep, SAT prep, the SAT Literature subject test, and the LSAT. Here is a recent story about Jessica and her TestWise SAT course.

Sean Lent

Sean Lent (Portland), who holds an MS in Education, teaches Social Studies at Deering High School.  Sean coaches debate at Deering High School, and in 2008, Sean taught the Maine Prep curricular SAT course at Bridgton Academy. Sean teaches SAT and the SAT History subject tests.

Jack Mahoney

Jack Mahoney (Brunswick) taught all major tests and trained teacher recruits in the New York City area for Stanley H. Kaplan (world’s largest test prep company). Jack founded Maine Prep in 2002, writes the curriculum, and teaches SAT, ACT, LSAT, GRE, GMAT, and SSAT prep, in addition to the SAT History subject tests.

 

Dan Meade

Dan Meade (Waterville) Raised in Dover-Foxcroft, Dan attended Bowdoin before receiving a master’s degree in physics from UNH. In a varied career, Dan has taught high school math and physics and worked as an engineer. Dan teaches SAT and ACT prep.

Dugan Slovenski

Dugan Slovenski (Brunswick) is a Stanford University graduate who holds a teaching certificate from Bates College. Dugan specializes in SAT, ACT, and SSAT prep, and the Math subject tests.

Susan Thombs

Susan Thombs (Kennebunkport) graduated Summa Cum Laude from Stonehill College. She taught English at Deering High School for six years. Susan teaches SAT prep, ACT prep, and the SAT Literature subject test.

Kathryn Toppan

Kathryn Toppan (Portland) is a National Board Certified AP English teacher at Deering High School.  Kathryn holds degrees in Psychology and English; she teaches SAT prep, ACT prep, and the SAT Literature subject test.

Frank Wicks

Frank Wicks (Marketing Director) holds a Masters in Education from the University of Southern Maine and a theater degree from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He toured the world with theater productions before moving to Maine and subsequently taught at Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham. Prior to joining Maine Prep, Frank served as managing director of Brunswick’s Theater Project.

Megan Perry

Megan Perry (Essay Specialist) is a Bowdoin College alumna who attended Indiana University’s graduate School of Education. She has many years’ experience with the college admissions process, including as an essay reader for various competitive colleges.
